kawashima: the guest this time is someone i have been working with in several shows before, someone i have shared an event stage too previously, and she is another person whose impression have changed after watching her performance... she's great! seriously, this person is really great. i will talk in more details why i think so highly of her later. in any case, she's great. for real. so much so that if my son were to marry, she is the kind of person i wish he could marry. she is such a great person even from the perspective of a father
kawa: sakurazaka members sure visit this show a lot, huh!
matsuri: that's right. thank you very much
kawa: every time a sakurazaka member visit, i can't help but to feel excited about it. perhaps because i seen your performance before
matsuri: you gave us praises and that made us really happy. i heard about it from yui-chan as well
kawa: we started working from tv shows, and then we also formed a band together for "love it! rock" event... and back then, i have yet to attend sakurazaka's concert. and after that... all i can say about you is how "great" you are
matsuri: kyahhh i'm so happy to hear that
ka: no like, seriously. you're really amazing
ma: ahh thank you!! ( >///<)
ka: didn't i talked to you before? in the in-between period from the time to love it, "you're really amazing", so i said. i'm sure sakurazaka fans must be thinking the same, of how great you are. you really have been working so hard, aren't you?
ma: that day i was so happy, i kept talking to my manager like, "omfg that was crazy! that was amazing!?". i also told my make up artist, "oh man, i'm so happy!". i was just so happy about it, i told my family about it and they were like, "we're so glad for you!"
ka: in usual, matsuri-chan might seems a bit off...
ma: hm? that's a choice of word
ka: but during performance you were really cool and hits it off the park. so much so i wonder if there were two of you. and like, you're the captain, right? you're the one leading that group of members that is full of personalities, and i could understand that it must be something difficult to do. even so, you still properly hold onto your mic, and properly did your MC-ing, making sure to look at every direction
ka: and when it comes to idol, there is the term "self-producing". like, there are those who are not good at speaking, right? and i am sure that there must be those who doesn't particularly put much effort into speaking as well. maybe they are like, "i'm charismatic enough already", even if they are not aware of it themselves
ma: hshs?? well there might be people like that out there
ka: yknow, the people who are nudged to speak a little bit more but they are like, "let's just move on to the next song" in a cool manner? and you could handle all these kind of people, huh? that's really amazing. you would go like, "aw no need to be so shy!". even though you're one of the members on stage, you also felt like the stage MC. i thought that was really amazing, you really looked at things from objective point of view
matsuri; actually, i still feel like i'm not that good at MC=ing... so hearing praises on my MC-iing like this really makes me happy and encourages me... i want to do my best to be able to handle any kind of situation, so hearing praises like this would make me thing, "oh, i'm so glad i did it"
ka: i went to watch it with tbs announcer tamura mako-san and haru-chan from borujyuku and we were like, "wow matsuri-chan was so great!"
ma: hshsh i'm happy to hear that. there are a lot of members who have trouble speaking during MC, such as not knowing how to begin, a difficulty i myself well aware of. but i have this feeling of wanting to help them, so in 4th tour, for the dome finale, i suggested that we should not appoint anyone in particular to speak during mc. i thought that way, no one knows who will get picked to speak out, and everyone might become more focused during the mc. i took the courage to change our way of doing things. and it is thanks to everyone's help and cooperation that our attitude toward mc-ing has changed...
ka: that's great of you. how many times am i going to repeat this today?
ma: hshs it's ok i like to be praised~
ka: but that's right, if there are members who are appointed in advance, then the other members will tink that there's no need for them to say anything today
ma: right, it will give them the opportunity to do a lot of fan services, but...
ka: right, but it's something necessary in the future life
ma: that's right, it's better if everyone has awareness about it, that would make a better mc-ing
ka: while you properly takes charge in sakurazaka, in the time you have a more "junior" vibe. the other announcers are just as young, but you are like, the only idol [among professional announcers]. and there is also azumi-san who likes to make you do unreasonable things!
ma: well yes, he does lol
ka: but that shows just how much he trusts you
ma: right, it makes me happy
kawa: so? how do you feel about that environment. you are working on your own there, no?
ma: it's exciting. at the beginning, there was nothing but nervousness, and i do still feel it right now, but there is also this sense of security from having azumi-san and the other announcers; like, whatever i do, they will be there to help me
ka: ah, so different from how you are in sakurazaka
ma: that's right, there is this sense of knowing that there are people who help you is you messes up. so i can just, give it my all
ka: you're good with finding your own place to be. you can just let go of your fear of reading too much into the situation
[matsuri's brief history as idol]
ka: how did you end up becoming an idol?
ma: there was an audition, but i didn't apply with the feeling of "i wanna become an idol! i wanna enter the entertainment industry! aight let's give this a try!". my sister told me about it like, "there's this audition. will you give it a try?", and i was like, "nah, i'm good", but then i lost to her persuasion and applied... then i ended up passing and become an idol
ka: so your sister likes idols?
ma: that's right, she loves keyakizaka and she wanted her sister to be in the group
ka: instead of herself!?
ma: yeah, she wants me, her sister. and i was like, "ok ok" and applied because of it
ka: you are from miyazaki?
ma: yeah, then i attended the 2nd round in kyushu, and driven to tokyo by my family for the 3rd round in tokyo...
ka: from miyazaki!?
ma: that's right haha
(T/N: takes about 16 hours)
ma: then at the end, i went to tokyo with my sister...
ka: so you kept progressing through the audition. what did you feel back then?
ma: at first i was just enjoying the experience. but then around 3rd round, we started to have longer wait time period, and i got to talk with the other girls. and like, i started to see how much hard work they put in to reach this far, or feel how much they like idols,... and like, i can't help but to feel sorry that someone like me could pass so far into the audition...
ma: and when i passed at the end and truly become an idol... i was already talking and befriending the other girls who are seated near me, but i was the only one who passed, so i was like, "oh no what should i do?". i just can't help but to feel awfully sorry. i was asked to stand on the stage, while the girls who didn't make it were asked to leave [the room]...
ka: that's harsh, but that's the way it works
ma: and those girls who didn't pass, as they exited they looked back to where i stand and showed their encouragement with gesture
ka: what! they are such nice girls!
ma: they really are! and in that moment i was like, "i have to work hard. i have to do my best so that they won't wonder why i passed and they didn't make it"
ka: and at the time you applied, you were actually working in a bank?
ma: that's right. i started working in one after graduating from hs
ka: how did your family react to your passing then?
ma: right... it's not like they were totally against it, but my dad said, "the bank has been employing you, and if you quit after only half a year it will cause them trouble. are you really going to quit?". my dad taught me the importance of the matter, but in the end my family thought i should give becoming an idol a try, so my family discussion decided
ka: i'm sure the people at the bank must have been surprised too
ma: they were really shocked!
ka: so you told them, "i'm going to become an idol"
ma: yeah, when i passed the 3rd round i started to freak out. so i thought that i should at least tell them about it... when i informed the management that i am still employed in a bank, they also said that i should tell my company, like informing them that i'm in an audition and the current situation. i told my supervisor and the chief about it. and they were like... happy about it?
ka: they are so kind!
ma: they really are! they were like, "that's amazing!", "i see, i will be cheering you on then". the upper management were the ones i informed in advance, and when i'm quitting i only told the real reason why i quit to my coworkers in my branch. and my boss said, "this better not be leaking anywhere! it will be troublesome if people come to our branch to take a look!"
ma: the other employees were also like, "that's amazing! we'll cheer you on!". normally people would say, "quitting only after working for such a short time?", right? but they didn't say anything like that and warmly sent me off... i'm really glad the the place i worked in was that bank
ka: now that you are successful, have you ever met them again?
ma: i'm still contact with me coworkers. their only responses are, "girl ur on tv lol". they are very casual with me
ka: so let's take a look at the biggest things that has happened in your career so far. first up is "big mess up in a a quiz show"
ka: this is... a difficult thing to talk about here. but of course, it wasn't something that you do by intention, but... it's the infamous nep league scene featuring five person
ka: this happened when you are really young, right?
ma: right, i think i was still 19 yo? i think i was only in the group for 6 months
ka: and then you got to appear in that golden time show...
ma: and such thing happened... i was pretty depressed about it, i was really freaking out
ka: it was legendary. that was amazing... it's a miracle that everyone else BUT you got it right. you could tell that matsuri-chan really didn't know the proverb... but then again it was a golden time show...
ma: yeah, it caused quite a ruckus
ka: what happened then? they are surely aware that you genuinely didn't know about the proverb and allowed it to be aired, but you were depressed about it?
ma: i really was. i thought that i caused a big mess. ka: the cast were laughing, the staff running around in panic...
ma: that's right. the filming was paused for quite a long time... that time i just entered the group and starting out as an idol, and i was so scared of causing trouble to the group, i was so worried and kept praying that it'll get cut out. but then i watched the broadcast...
ka: and then you see the question asked...
ma: i was like, "oh shoot, i'm done". i told the members, "i'm so cooked", "i'm really sorry"
ka: so you were like, but it left a huge impact. when i saw the broadcast, i myself thought that it was amazing, your management surely also thought that matsuri-chan was amazing
ma: i still feel sorry toward the management for causing such a trouble, but now it makes it easy to people to know me like, "oh she's the one from that!?", so i started to think that it might be alright at the end
ka: were your parents okay with it?
ma: they immediately contacted me... my dad said, "you didn't just leave a mark, you left a whole scar", "you sure did something amazing". my dad was praising me
ka: you sincerely didn't know, so it was a pure, innocent mess up. and from there you show up in even more variety shows, and then you became a regular cast in the time. you've been a part of it since it first started, so it's been three years? you've been really working hard
ma: no, not at all. i'm really grateful for the opportunity
ka: how did you feel when you first learn about it? were you like, "eh!?"
ma: yeah. i was taken to a different room, and they told me, "you will be a regular cast in this new morning show that is starting soon"... and i was like, "oh... what is it even?", since there was no information about it at the time. but since there are shows like love it already, i thought that it will be a kin to season regular gig that i will do for around 3 months
ma: and then i actually worked on it, and three years has passed. the experience i gained from the time has been really huge, there are so many that i learned from it too, and it's something that i could feel every day
ka: can you explain it in more details?
ma: memorizing, like how before a vtr plays there is a lead in to it that briefly explains what is it about, right? i become capable of memorizing it better
ma: those are lines that i only receive on the day, so i can only prepare once i arrive at work, so i had to memorize things i only just received while on the move and then say it on the live broadcast
ma: even now i still feel nervous about it, and well sometimes i do fumble my words or forget a few lines, but i think that i'm more steeled now
ka: then again it was something you do by yourself, right? it's not like there's five of you in the show
ma: that's right, there's that sense of nervousness from being on my own too. there is a feeling of ease from having other members with me
ma: working on my own early in the morning gives me courage when i work somewhere else. like, "i managed to do the time just fine, this should be ok". i was really able to experience so many things, even location filming
ma: i also grasped how difficult it is to interview someone else, something i am still unable to do. like, it's so difficult to ask questions
ka: but still, you are able to experience things you won't be able to get to in sakurazaka. they have lots of expectations on you. now on the third point: selected to be the captain. what was the story behind it?
ma: i don't know the details, like why is it me, but i was previously appointed as vice captain already. so it feels like that pipeline
ka: i see, so like you've been watching how captain yuuka works, and then from there it's smoothly passed to you?
ma; that's right. sugai yuuka-san informed me of her graduation earlier than everyone else, but she never said anything about me being the next captain, but in the inside i thought, "maybe i should make preparations so that if i'm selected as captain, i won't be that shocked about it"
ka: you're such a good girl!
ma: so like, things will go nicely whether or not i'm selected as the next captain
ka: right, so you are prepared with any outcome. if it wasn't you, then ofc you'd be happy for the member who is selected. but then you really did get selected, and what did you feel then? did you feel pressure?
ma: there sure was... some pressure... after i got selected as captain, shortly after 3ki joined the group, and then around march~april the next year there was a 3rd tour for the group... so i was really overwhelmed
ka: so you became a captain at such an eventful time, huh?
ma: that's right. and i wasn't able to keep up with what i was required to do as someone in my position, i felt pretty disappointed on myself back then
ka: you still haven't sorted out your feelings, but then tour is starting, and you need to teach the 3ki members too. there sure was a lot, huh?
ma: it really was! i can lead the mc sessions in the main show and encore just fine now, but back then i was too overwhelmed to lead the encore. i did the few first ones, but i thought that i didn't manage to do it well and i wanted help, so i asked other members to take over... i think i have grown since then...
ka: being a captain must be a difficult thing, isn't it? and it's something you've been selected to do
ma: the other members greatly support me, and the fans are warmly watching over me, and i managed to get by somehow. i am not a captain material at all, but i somehow managed to do my job as one
ka; but still, i think it's really great. you even prepared yourself in advance in the case you actually got appointed as one
ma: right, i think i'm the kind of person who tend to put myself in the shoes of others
ka: i think that's a really good attitude to have. in this industry-- world, if you only prepare when you got selected, then there will be a lot of things that you won't be able to do in time. this is really important, i even told my juniors the same thing. they need to imagine on the things they need to do when they become a hit, if not they will just flutter out of it
ka: it seems that you have been having worries recently. that is, "i don't know my own character" lol... after we have been talking about YOU as a person this much? you still don't know?
ma: i still don't! i really feel troubled by it. i think of myself as someone who, for example i appear in a show, i'd be someone whose name and face are unknown and people has no idea what kind of person i am. i've been thinking that i need to someone better recognized by the viewers and costars like, "oh! she's that girl! ok then i can do this on the show". but i still can't do something like that, like, you can say that i don't have that unique of individuality
ka: not at all
ma: it's not impactful. and that is really difficult to solve... like, what should i do to make my costars knows me better?
ka: hmm i think it's something that takes time. i think everyone in the end will always think, "i didn't expect to make it with this character". after all, it's something they have been doing from the start, and as they do the same thing over time, it becomes something that leave its mark. even if you appear as someone weird, there is still the possibility that no one remembers you anyway, so i think you should continue being who you are as it is
ma: right, i thought that even if i make up something, in the end i won't be able to hide who i really are. that's why i have been doing it as myself as it is, but then i thought that i'm not remarkable at all... maybe it really is that takes more time?
ka: you're still really young! it's not exactly a characteristic, but sometimes when you look back there are times when you'd think, "that girl matches well with everyone", right? so i think that having no character might be best. after all, plain water tastes best, no?
ma: right!!
ka: but plain water sells best, right?
ma: gasppp
ka: then front now on, please continue to aim to be delicious plain water. or well, if you feel like it, maybe go and become cola for a bit. tastes sweet, but as time goes on, i think that everyone will become plain water
ma: then i can just continue to stay the way i am as i do my best...
ka: yeah, because i'm sure that there are people watching you still. worrying over your character is just a waste of time
ma: right! thank you very much!
ka: well then, let me ask you about people who are helping you out. tsuchida teruyuki-san!
ma: ah! there are a lot of people who helped me, but tsuchida-san is the mc of my group show, so he has truly been watching me over since the time i entered the group. i never really recovered from my mess up in quiz show, and i never brought it up in other shows when we are working together, i thought that it is something that i should not bring up
ma: but tsuchida-san is... for example, we had this academic test in the show and they asked who feel confidence about their scores in national language. i raised my hand, but tsuchida-san was like, "i don't think that girl will do well. we've seen what you can do!"
ma: he teases me about my mess up in a funny way. or in another time, he would joke with, "matsuda doesn't match well with quizzes". and that like, helped me to release it, that i can just turn my mess up into a joke. i was able to change it that way because of tsuchida-san's teasing
